This region is particularly susceptible to rockfalls due to its deeply incised river valleys and steep, towering rock formations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An overview of potential hazards caused by mass movements is provided by the hazard indication map of the Bavarian Environment Agency (LfU).\nThis map outlines the potential spatial occurrence of mass movements and helps identify possible conflict areas between natural hazards and land use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tobias Gebhard, a Master's student in the \u201cGeosciences\u201d program at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, developed an automated method as part of his thesis to analyze these hazard indication areas in greater detail and to prioritize them for expert assessments.\nThe thesis received technical support from the LGA team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An automated prioritization of hazard indication areas (HIAs) is a valuable tool in practical applications, especially in large regions or areas with numerous HIAs.\nIt enables a more differentiated assessment of the need for investigations of rock masses and process zones, and helps establish the order in which expert evaluations should be conducted.\nIn the deeply incised river valleys of the Franconian Jura, for example, a significant proportion of land lies within the hazard indication areas defined by the Bavarian Environment Agency (LfU).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specifically, Tobias processed various remote sensing and infrastructure data within a GIS program and intersected them with trajectory-based hazard zones.\nThe hazard zones were classified into low, moderate, and high priority levels.\nTo validate the prioritization, the risk of rockfall was subsequently examined on-site in selected areas and modeled using a rockfall simulation program.\nThe field inspections showed a high level of agreement with the automated prioritization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1409\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_1_GIS_Model-1409x1920.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15783\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_1_GIS_Model-1409x1920.jpg 1409w, https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_1_GIS_Model-705x960.jpg 705w, https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_1_GIS_Model-768x1046.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_1_GIS_Model-1127x1536.jpg 1127w, https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_1_GIS_Model-1503x2048.jpg 1503w, https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_1_GIS_Model-9x12.jpg 9w, https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_1_GIS_Model.jpg 1835w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1409px) 100vw, 1409px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Results of the Automated Prioritization in a Section of the Investigation Area<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results of the on-site investigations were also compiled in the form of intensity, hazard, and risk maps.\nThese maps can serve as effective communication tools for authorities, planning offices, and the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1561\" height=\"1920\" src=\"https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_2_Intensitaet_Gefahren_Risikokarte-1561x1920.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15782\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_2_Intensitaet_Gefahren_Risikokarte-1561x1920.jpg 1561w, https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_2_Intensitaet_Gefahren_Risikokarte-781x960.jpg 781w, https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_2_Intensitaet_Gefahren_Risikokarte-768x944.jpg 768w, https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_2_Intensitaet_Gefahren_Risikokarte-1249x1536.jpg 1249w, https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_2_Intensitaet_Gefahren_Risikokarte-1665x2048.jpg 1665w, https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_2_Intensitaet_Gefahren_Risikokarte-10x12.jpg 10w, https:\/\/lga-geo.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/Abb_2_Intensitaet_Gefahren_Risikokarte.jpg 2033w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1561px) 100vw, 1561px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Intensity, Hazard, and Risk Map of an Investigation Area<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We congratulate Tobias on his outstanding Master's thesis and are especially pleased that he has been part of the LGA team in the Engineering Geology department since April. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Welcome aboard!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Felsabg\u00e4nge wie Stein- und Blockschl\u00e4ge z\u00e4hlen zu den gef\u00e4hrlichsten Naturgefahren weltweit.
