Safety structures against alpine natural hazards

What are protective structures against alpine natural hazards?

When natural events such as rockfall, falling blocks, landslides or debris flows become a natural hazard because there is a risk of harmful effects on people, the environment, infrastructure or material goods, there is an urgent need for action. In addition to organisational or technological measures, structural measures in the form of safety structures (SiBW) can also be considered to minimise risks. These include primary safety measures such as rock nails or netting, which prevent the process in the release area, as well as secondary safety measures such as rockfall protection fences, gabions or palisades, which act as fall arrest systems or roll-off protection. Expertise is required not only in the planning and construction of the safety structures, but also in the regular inspection of the condition of the structure with regard to functionality and durability.

Condition assessment of safety structures (SiBW) - inspection, control and testing

The condition of rock nails, cross-linking, safety fences etc. must be assessed over the entire service life by means of regular inspections with varying monitoring intensity. In this way, defects and damage to components can be recognised in good time and the need for action to ensure the best possible preservation and maintenance of the SiBW can be determined. As registered experts for safety structures (BayIK-Bau), we have the necessary knowledge to carry out inspections, checks and tests, also on behalf of the Bavarian State Building Administration. We work in accordance with the specifications and recommendations of the Central Centre for Engineering structures and Georisks (ZIG) of the Bavarian State Building Directorate.
