Environmental construction supervision

Environmental construction monitoring starts at the very beginning!

The interplay of countless animal and plant species keeps nature alive and millennia-old balances in the geosphere stabilise the earth's surface. Disturbing reports of environmental damage and natural disasters make it clear that the environment and nature are limited resources worth protecting. Damage resulting from changes in natural conditions and delays in the construction process can be avoided by incorporating ecological concerns into the planning process at an early stage.

Environmental construction supervision (UBB) is therefore now requested and used for projects of all sizes. It ensures that the protection of the soil from erosion, compaction and contamination as well as the protection of flora and fauna are adequately taken into account. UBB is therefore at the interface between construction activities and environmental protection. The generic term environmental construction monitoring includes the sub-areas of ecological construction monitoring (ÖBB) and pedological construction monitoring (BBB).

If the course is not set at the planning stage, construction stops and damage can be the result. UBB therefore starts together with the planners and provides advice on the implementation of planned measures throughout the entire construction period.

What does ecological construction monitoring do?

Ecological construction monitoring (ÖBB) ensures that nature conservation requirements are implemented during the construction project. It thus serves to preserve the plants and animals worthy of protection in the area of influence of a construction project. While the focus here is also on species that enjoy a high legal protection status due to Natura 2000 requirements, Red List species can also be included. Ecological construction monitoring ensures that the requirements of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (BNatSchG) as well as state law (BayNatSchG) or other regulations (e.g. when working in a nature or landscape conservation area) are complied with.

How does ecological construction monitoring work?

Ideally, ÖBB supports the measures from the start of planning to the completion of the work. It is regularly on site and supports the correct implementation of the measures planned as part of the LBP, saP or species protection concepts during the practical realisation of the construction process. This avoids delays in the planned process while at the same time ensuring compliance with legal requirements. We offer ecological construction monitoring to support clients and planners.

Soil science construction supervision

Why is soil so valuable?

Soil is a valuable resource. It takes tens of thousands of years for 30 cm of topsoil to form. This top layer is our foundation of life, fulfilling various functions. Therefore, soil must be protected from avoidable harmful changes. Besides the introduction of pollutants, these can include soil compaction, mixing valuable topsoil with worthless soil materials, damage to soil life, and much more. The result is irreversibly destroyed soil structures and properties, rendering the soil worthless.

What does the pedological construction supervision do?

Soil science construction monitoring (BBB) ensures that precautions are taken against the occurrence of harmful changes to the soil, as required by the German Federal Soil Protection Act (BBodSchG). If more than 3,000 m² of topsoil or soil with a high functional fulfilment is to be used, a soil protection concept for the appropriate handling of the soil should be drawn up. Affected soil types and their properties are recorded by soil experts before the start of the measures. The spatial distribution of different soil types in the relevant project area is mapped. Based on this, the certified pedological construction supervision team develops the soil protection concept. During the construction phase, the BBB ensures that the framework conditions of the protection concept are adhered to by regularly visiting the construction site until recultivation is complete. Short-term reactions to changing conditions are the basis for the consistent implementation of the soil protection concept.
