Water Framework Directive (WFD) and hydrogeology

"Water is life, and clean water means health"

The quote from UNICEF ambassador Audrey Hepburn implies a duty to ensure clean water worldwide. Increasing levels of pollution are affecting the quality and quantity of water available. However, harmful substances do not only pose a direct threat to humans, but also to aquatic ecology and food chains.

Our hydrogeologists, geoecologists, contaminated site experts and chemists help to prevent water hazards right from the planning stage and develop effective remediation concepts for contaminated water bodies.

The EU's WFD calls for clean water by 2027

Directive 2000/60/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 October 2000, the Water Framework Directive, requires all EU member states to achieve "good status" for rivers, lakes, transitional waters, coastal waters and groundwater by 2027 at the latest. This means that human activity will only have a minimal impact on aquatic biocoenoses, water body structures, chemical constituents of surface waters and groundwater and available quantities.

We test water for compliance with quality targets and develop concepts to improve groundwater and surface water bodies. The aim is sustainable and environmentally friendly water utilisation.

We can do hydrogeology

Clean groundwater, from which drinking water is extracted, is essential for humans as food. Increasing levels of pollution are affecting the quality and quantity available. The designation and monitoring of drinking water protection areas are important tasks of the present and safeguard the future of this important resource. Wherever contamination is imminent or has already occurred, we analyse the risk situation and develop remediation concepts.

In terms of the WFD, the infiltration of rainwater is also a sensible thing to do. It makes a valuable contribution to the regeneration of groundwater. However, it should not be forgotten that with constantly rising wastewater charges, rainwater infiltration (provided the site is suitable for infiltration) can save a lot of money.
