Sediment analyses

Sedimentation and eutrophication are a problem

In many places, watercourses have been dammed in recent decades (for flood protection, as water reservoirs) and dams or reservoirs have been created. As a result, the natural sediment transport of watercourses is interrupted. However, the tributaries to the reservoirs continuously supply large quantities of sediment, which are deposited in the artificial standing water bodies.

In addition to a steady decrease in water absorption capacity, eutrophication (nutrient enrichment, algal blooms) usually also occurs in dams and reservoirs. In order to improve the water quality and restore the functionality of the dams or reservoirs, (partial) desedimentation is unavoidable.

The Closed Substance Cycle Waste Management Act (KrWG) requires that waste must be recycled to the highest possible quality. This means that dredged material from desedimentation measures - if necessary after dewatering and treatment - must be recycled, e.g. applied to agricultural land. Depending on the catchment area and water inflow, the sediments may contain elevated concentrations of pollutants (e.g. heavy metals, MKW), which must be correctly assessed and evaluated.

Professional qualification

Our "Inspection body for contaminated building materials and construction waste" works on the basis of a QM system in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17020. We are accredited in accordance with DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 by the German Accreditation Body (DAkkS) and have a licence in accordance with §18 of the Federal Soil Protection Act.

Our experts and samplers, who have many years of experience, are qualified to take samples of solid waste in accordance with LAGA PN98 (LAGA Notices M32) and are always up to date with the latest technology and knowledge thanks to continuous further training.

They always work on the basis of current legal requirements, such as the Federal Soil Protection Ordinance (BBodSchV) and the Substitute Building Materials Ordinance (EBV).

Environmental compatibility and economic efficiency

Desedimentation measures require extensive and lengthy planning and preparation. In addition to the legal waste aspects (pollutant content), special attention is also paid to the nature conservation aspects. The presence of protected animal or plant species can influence the scope and course of remediation measures. Coordination with many project participants (client, nature conservation authorities, specialised authorities, etc.) is therefore necessary as early as the planning phase.

We see it as our task to determine the individual interests of those involved in the project, to assess them neutrally and to derive options for action that are as environmentally friendly and economically feasible as possible. Our documented expertise and neutrality ensure that our investigations and expert opinions are recognised by the authorities.

We stand for cost-effective, customised investigations and practice-oriented solutions.
