Rock cellar

Rock cellars in danger of collapsing - a safety risk!

The presence of historic cellars carved into the rock is often poorly documented. However, as a forgotten element of our urban landscape, these mostly medieval structures can pose a considerable safety risk - especially under construction sites or traffic areas. While traffic volumes, axle loads and the natural weathering of the rock increase, the condition of the load-bearing vaults, hidden underground, eludes all observation. There is a risk of structural damage due to subsidence and even daily collapses that could endanger lives. Knowledge of the exact location and cover of the rock cellars and the condition of the rock itself is therefore essential for maintaining road safety and is an important building block for sustainable transport and spatial planning.

How are rock cellars analysed?

Whether in orientating condition assessments or detailed damage mapping, through reviews of historical site plans or centimetre-precise 3D surveys - we bring to light what lies beneath the ground surface to the level of detail you require. With our team of geoscientists, structural engineers and surveyors, we assess the stability of your basement systems and, if necessary, plan stabilisation and renovation measures. As a company based in Franconia, we also appreciate the cultural and ecological value of rock cellars and always keep an eye on the preservation of the monumental character and the protection of the sensitive cave fauna.
