HSM

HSM is the abbreviation for wood preservative. Wood preservatives can be categorised as follows:

  • solvent-based HSMs (active ingredients, etc.) PCP, Lindane, DDT)
  • HSMs containing coal tar, e.g. tar oils (active substance: PAH)
  • Water-soluble salt-based HSMs (with inorganic active ingredients: mercury, arsenic, boron, chromium, fluoride, copper, zinc)

In particular, load-bearing timber components (roof beams, etc.) had to be treated with chemical wood preservatives in the FRG until the end of the 1980s and in the former GDR until 1990.
