The 13th Marketredwitz Soil Protection Days took place from 14 to 16 October under the theme“Soil Value and Soil Performance: Assessing, Preserving and Restoring Soil Functions.”The event provided valuable insights into the latest developments in soil protection, contaminated land management, brownfield redevelopment, and sustainable site development.
Corinna Schillinger, Ira Stassinopoulos and Michaela Kukuk took the opportunity to explore recent developments in preventive soil protection and gain valuable insights for their day-to-day project work. This year’s focus was on the assessment of soil functions, examining the ecosystem services soils provide and how these can be effectively integrated into planning and development processes. Particularly enriching were the diverse perspectives on soil protection presented by project owners, volunteer initiatives, and the agricultural sector. The programme was further complemented by practice-oriented presentations on soil science support during construction projects, providing valuable examples of how soil protection measures can be successfully implemented on site. These insights are directly incorporated into our projects, helping to ensure that soil is considered from the earliest stages of planning and development.
A particular highlight of the event was the technical excursion to the Greenpark Marktredwitz with its photovoltaic installation, the Bürgerpark Krummennaab, and the Geo-Centre at the German Continental Deep Drilling Program (KTB) in Windischeschenbach. Participants also had the opportunity to visit the Erdbodenhaus, which opened earlier this year and showcases soil profiles from the collection of the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (LfU). How different soils are structured and the functions they perform is demonstrated there in an impressive and highly tangible way.

We would like to thank the organisers for this well-executed and informative event and are already looking forward to the next Marketredwitz Soil Protection Days.
