The heavy metal mercury is classified as toxic, carcinogenic and hazardous to water. It was and is frequently used in the following applications in liquid form (pressure gauges, thermometers, pumps, rectifiers, switches, fluorescent tubes, energy-saving lamps, etc.)as Colour pigment (vermilion) or as Wood preservative. In nature, it is bound in biomass, raw materials (e.g. limestone) and fuels (especially coal) and is released back into the atmosphere during processing or combustion until it returns to the soil and biomass with precipitation.
