The Fluegelsberg in the Altmuehltal is safe again. In 2021, the LGA identified significant deficiencies in the functionality and durability of the rockfall protection fence at the base of the rock formation during an inspection. Conclusion: The fence system, built around 1980, needed to be replaced. During the reconstruction, an old individual protection in the rock wall and the fall protection at the viewpoint were also renewed, and a previously unsecured rock section near the top was netted.

The Fluegelsberg is part of numerous ecologically significant protected areas. Therefore, our Ecology Department prepared an LBP in advance and was tasked with the ecological construction supervision of the rock stabilization measure. In close coordination with Corinna Schillinger, Simon Landgraf planned the stabilization structures and construction site logistics, taking into account the ecological requirements. For example, the vegetation of the biotope, including the rock crevice vegetation in the FFH area, had to be protected. At the same time, the breeding seasons of the peregrine falcon and the eagle owl had to be considered, during which no noisy work was possible. Due to weather conditions, short-term adjustments were also necessary during the construction period. For instance, a planned grass protection grid to protect the vegetation had to be replaced with a helicopter flight. The coordination of nature conservation and rock stabilization under one roof proved to be very efficient.

A particular success is the special structural solution in the net area at the top of the rock. It includes a recess and framing of the nesting cave of the protected peregrine falcon. The installed monitoring has shown that, in addition to other guests such as the Egyptian goose and the kestrel, the peregrine falcon also feels comfortable again. It has also been proven that the cave continues to be accepted by birds as a nesting site.
